Multiple studies have shown the benefits of peer mentorship, including increased connectedness to school and peers; beneficial relationships with teachers; and improvements in self-esteem. TIP Scholars aims to bring these benefits to our program participants throughout their academic career at UT Austin.

TIP Scholars Peer Mentors are successful and talented students within the College of Natural Sciences who assist incoming first-year students as they transition to life in the UT Austin community. They are trained in peer leadership and work closely with up to six first-year students through group and individualized mentorship sessions. TIP Peer Mentors are an integral part of the staff at the TIP Scholars Program and serve as the first point of contact for their mentees.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Attend weekly mentor training
  • Lead biweekly mentee group meetings
  • Conduct biweekly individual meetings with each assigned mentee
  • Update TIP Scholars Mentor Academy staff on individual mentee progress
  • Commitment to a full one-year term of employment, which is renewable contingent upon successful job performance

BENEFITS

  • Up to 7-Hour per week employment*
  • Competitive UT Austin student employee compensation ($11.50/Hr)
  • Experience working with a diverse population of students
  • Flexible hours
  • Valuable, transferrable skills acquisition (e.g., cultural / leadership competency, conflict resolution, etc.)

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Open to current / former TIP Scholars
  • In-residence, overall 3.0 GPA or higher
  • Successful completion of NSC 109 in the Spring semester preceding the appointment
  • Eligible to work in the U.S.
